My major field experience took place in a kindergarten classroom! Since my decision to become a teacher lies on my experience helping in a kindergarten class, this field experience was extremely enjoyable.
Our first theme of the school year was apples. We learned that apples come in different colours. We had a taste-testing lesson where we got to try each colour to determine which one was our favourite. We learned about the different parts of an apple by cutting into it. Each student brought in an apple so that we could make apple sauce.

With the beginning of Fall we learned about...
As Halloween approached, we did many activities that helped us practise our cutting, gluing, colouring, and writing. |

One of my favourite lessons involved incorporating science into the classroom through a pumpkin investigation.
I made the worksheet below for my students in order for them to document our science discovery of what is inside a pumpkin. Each student had an opportunity to dig out some of the seeds on the inside. We then turned the pumpkins into Jack'o'Lantern's for the class which stayed displayed until Halloween.

After Halloween, we focused on Remembrance Day, hibernation, as well as learning our numbers and letters.
Students made poppies out of shapes, cupcake liners, and also free drew them. To find out more about my SMARTboard lesson for creating poppies using shapes, visit my Integrating Technology page.

Since winter was approaching, students learned about bears and squirrels, as well as hibernation. We used plastic forks to create the fur on these bears. I was also able to create laminated patterning sheets for my students featuring bears. Finally, my students really enjoyed reading Corduroy Bear and creating their own Corduroy out of paper bags.

When learning our letters, my Cooperating Teacher enjoyed using the Phonics Program. We learned many different words that started with the letter we were studying through reading the accompanying book. Making lists of words that start with the specified letter was helpful, and allowed students to practice counting as well. Finally, we would create large letters using a material that started with the letter of focus. Here, you can see large 'S" with string overlaying the block letter.
